WHO's New Kenya Representative Takes Office as Health Reform Enters Critical Phase

NAIROBI, Kenya — 21 August 2026

Dr Neema Rusibamayila Kimambo has formally taken up her role as World Health Organization Representative to Kenya, strengthening the organisation's leadership at a pivotal period for the country's health-sector reforms.

Dr Kimambo presented her credentials to Kenya's Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, on 13 August. WHO formally reported the appointment on 21 August.

A Tanzanian public-health specialist and paediatrician with more than 25 years of experience, Dr Kimambo had served as Acting WHO Representative to Kenya since the beginning of 2026.

Her appointment comes as Kenya pursues major reforms around universal health coverage, local manufacturing of health products and technologies, maternal and newborn survival and emergency preparedness.

The timing gives the WHO country office an important role in supporting implementation rather than simply policy development.

Kenya's health reform agenda also has regional relevance. As one of East Africa's largest health systems and a major regional medical and pharmaceutical hub, developments in Kenya can influence health policy, supply chains, professional networks and emergency preparedness across neighbouring countries.

The appointment also reinforces the regional dimension of WHO's work in East Africa. Health emergencies, workforce mobility, pharmaceutical supply chains and disease surveillance increasingly cross national boundaries.

For Kenya's development partners, the key issue will be how effectively technical cooperation translates into stronger institutions and improved health outcomes.

Dr Kimambo's tenure therefore begins at a moment when Kenya is seeking to convert substantial health-policy ambition into more resilient systems, stronger domestic capacity and equitable access to quality healthcare.
