The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa has reported a sharp rise in cholera cases across parts of Southern and Eastern Africa, linking the surge to flooding, displacement, and weakened sanitation systems.
According to WHO updates, cholera cases in early 2026 have significantly exceeded numbers recorded during the same period in 2025. Flooding has disrupted clean water access and damaged sanitation infrastructure, creating conditions conducive to outbreaks.
Health agencies are urging countries to strengthen water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions alongside vaccination campaigns and surveillance systems to curb further spread.
The development highlights the growing intersection between climate events and infectious disease vulnerability in the region.
