WHO Releases 2026 Africa Health Workforce Report

Brazzaville | 16 June 2026

The World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa has released the 2026 State of the Health Workforce in Africa report, calling attention to the role of health workers in resilient health systems, universal health coverage and health security.

The report, published on 16 June, says African countries have made progress in expanding the health workforce, strengthening governance and improving data systems. However, WHO notes that these gains are unfolding against rapid population growth, changing disease patterns, fiscal pressure and global competition for health workers.

The report introduces a stronger health labour market and investment perspective and follows the adoption of the Africa Health Workforce Investment Charter.

For East African countries, the findings are relevant to ongoing reforms in health financing, primary health care, emergency preparedness, local training systems and retention of frontline workers.

Health workforce shortages remain a major constraint in expanding access to quality care, especially in underserved rural areas, refugee-hosting communities, border districts and fragile settings.
