The World Health Organization has launched a US$518 million six-month response plan aimed at containing the Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
The announcement follows a steady rise in confirmed cases linked to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a rare variant for which no approved vaccine or specific treatment currently exists. WHO officials said the funding will support outbreak control activities in affected areas while strengthening preparedness measures in neighboring countries.
The response plan includes surveillance, laboratory testing, border screening, case management, infection prevention, community engagement, and logistics support.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for sustained international financing and political commitment, noting that the outbreak remained a significant public health concern due to cross-border population movement and delayed detection during the early stages of transmission.
The outbreak has prompted intensified surveillance across East Africa as governments seek to prevent further spread.
