WHO Launches Regional Health Data Hub to Strengthen Evidence-Based Decisions
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — 27 August 2026
The World Health Organization has launched a new Regional Health Data Hub designed to bring fragmented health information together and convert it into actionable intelligence for governments across Africa.
The platform was launched on 27 August during the 76th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa in Addis Ababa. WHO says the hub brings together health information from across its 47 African Member States, providing decision-makers with a more consolidated view of health trends and system performance.
The development has particular significance for East Africa, where governments are increasingly investing in digital health systems, disease surveillance and data-driven planning.
Reliable health data is essential for deciding where to deploy health workers, medicines, vaccines and infrastructure. It is also increasingly important for monitoring outbreaks and identifying emerging health risks.
However, many health systems continue to operate with fragmented information systems, inconsistent reporting and gaps in data quality. These weaknesses can make it difficult for governments and development partners to see where resources are most urgently required.
A regional platform could help improve comparability and strengthen evidence-based decision-making, provided countries maintain accurate and timely reporting.
The initiative also reflects a wider transformation in development practice. Data is increasingly viewed not simply as a reporting requirement but as infrastructure for better policy.
For East Africa, the opportunity is substantial. Better integration of health information could support cross-border disease surveillance, regional planning and more targeted investment.
The challenge will be ensuring that digital systems are interoperable, secure and accessible to national decision-makers.
The development objective is ultimately straightforward: better data should lead to better decisions, stronger health systems and improved health outcomes.
