WHO Ethiopia Promotes Action on Physical Activity and Hypertension Control
Addis Ababa | 12 June 2026
WHO Ethiopia has highlighted efforts by United Nations staff in Ethiopia to promote physical activity and hypertension control, drawing attention to the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases.
The update, published by WHO Africa on 12 June, focused on prevention, awareness, and behaviour change around hypertension, which remains a major public health risk across the region.
Noncommunicable diseases are increasingly placing pressure on health systems that are already responding to infectious disease threats, maternal health needs, nutrition challenges, and emergency response demands.
The Ethiopia initiative reinforces the role of workplace health promotion, early screening, and prevention in reducing long-term disease burden.
WHO’s messaging reflects a wider health policy shift across Africa, where governments and partners are being urged to address communicable and noncommunicable diseases together rather than as separate priorities.
