WFP and UNICEF Launch Joint Cash and Nutrition Response for Karamoja, Uganda

WFP and UNICEF are running a joint humanitarian nutrition response in Uganda's Karamoja region, funded through the Uganda Humanitarian Fund, after the 2026 Integrated Food Security Phase Classification found that 473,000 people, about 32 percent of the region's analysed population, face crisis level hunger or worse between April and July, including roughly 41,000 in Emergency phase.

Under the joint programme, WFP is targeting prevention and moderate acute malnutrition treatment for 27,000 cases and support for 3,000 mothers, delivered through in kind assistance and, for the first time in the response, cash based transfers. UNICEF will screen 90,000 children under five and treat 15,500 for severe acute malnutrition, focusing on Kaabong, Kotido and Moroto districts.

Officials from both agencies describe the shift toward earlier screening and cash based delivery as central to reducing the number of children who reach life threatening stages of malnutrition before receiving care.
