WFP activates South Sudan's first drought anticipatory action plan

Juba and Eastern Equatoria, 10 July 2026

The United Nations World Food Programme and the Government of South Sudan activated the country's first ever drought anticipatory action plan, targeting more than 65,000 people in Budi and Kapoeta North counties as drought risk intensifies in Eastern Equatoria State. Anticipatory action triggers humanitarian assistance before a crisis takes hold rather than after, WFP said.

Under the plan, WFP is distributing cash assistance to 52,751 people while delivering early warning messages and preparedness information to help households protect food security and livelihoods before drought conditions worsen. Mutinta Chimuka, WFP's Country Director in South Sudan, said anticipatory action is transforming how climate related shocks are managed in the country. The programme also promotes drought preparedness through awareness campaigns on livestock management, efficient water use and livelihood planning.

The activation was supported by funding from the Korea International Cooperation Agency and Germany, building on earlier investments from Ireland and the Korea International Cooperation Agency that helped establish South Sudan's anticipatory action system, including development of the drought plan and enhanced operational readiness.
