US extends entry restrictions after humanitarian worker's Ebola infection
Washington and Bunia, 13 July 2026
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that an American citizen working for a humanitarian organisation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo tested positive for Bundibugyo virus and was medically evacuated to Germany on 13 July for treatment. The agency said the patient had been supporting the Ebola response in Bunia, the epicentre of the outbreak in Ituri Province.
The same day, the United States issued an order continuing the suspension of entry into the country for specified foreign nationals who had recently been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or neighbouring South Sudan, extending the measure for a further 30 days. CDC continued to recommend that travellers avoid non essential travel to Haut Uele, Ituri, North Kivu and Tshopo provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and advised travellers to other parts of the country and Uganda to monitor for symptoms for 21 days after departure.
CDC said the overall risk to the American public remains low, with no cases of Ebola disease linked to this outbreak reported within the United States to date.
