UNICEF and UN mission support reintegration of South Sudan's child soldiers

The United Nations Children's Fund, together with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, said it continues to work with the Government of South Sudan to support the release and reintegration of children associated with armed forces and armed groups. Brendan Ross, UNICEF's Chief of Child Protection in South Sudan, described the ongoing effort to help formerly recruited children rebuild their lives through reunification with families, psychosocial support and vocational training.

UNICEF said children remain vulnerable to recruitment amid decades of conflict, recurring climate shocks and economic hardship in South Sudan, with released children requiring sustained, individualised support to prevent re recruitment and enable successful reintegration into civilian life. The agency continues to coordinate closely with the National Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Commission and government child protection authorities on verification, release and follow up support for affected children.
