UK commits £5 million to help 600,000 people prepare for El Niño flooding in Somalia
The United Kingdom has announced £5 million in new humanitarian funding to help vulnerable communities in Somalia prepare for anticipated El Niño-related flooding during the October to December Deyr rainy season.
Announced by the British Embassy in Mogadishu on 24 September, the funding is intended to strengthen early warning systems, support the safe movement of families at risk and maintain essential services in flood-prone areas.
The intervention is expected to benefit up to 600,000 people through health, nutrition, water, sanitation and protection services. Support will include efforts to keep up to 71 health facilities operational, alongside mobile health services for communities displaced by flooding or cut off from routine assistance.
The programme will also support people living in nearly 100 internally displaced persons' camps, where seasonal flooding can disrupt access to healthcare, clean water and other essential services.
Jowhar and Beletweyne are among the locations identified for particular attention because of their exposure to flooding. Protecting livelihoods and helping communities prepare before the rains intensify are central elements of the announced intervention.
The funding comes as humanitarian agencies across the region prepare for the effects of the 2026/2027 El Niño season. Early warning, anticipatory assistance and continuity of basic services are important for reducing displacement and preventing climate shocks from worsening existing food insecurity and humanitarian needs.
