Uganda Reports Four Suspected Rabies Deaths as Vaccine Shortage Persists in Adjumani
Adjumani District, Uganda | 27 July 2026
At least four people, mainly children, have reportedly died of suspected rabies in Adjumani District's Arinyapi, Leanguru, Nyabila and Itirikwa sub-counties, according to reporting on 27 July, amid a prolonged shortage of anti-rabies vaccines at government health facilities.
The Adjumani District Health Officer said demand for post-exposure vaccines has continued to rise while government supply remains inadequate, leaving many affected families unable to afford treatment at private facilities. District leaders, including LC V Chairperson John Anyanzo Ambayo, have pledged to engage the Ministry of Health to restore supply and address a rising population of stray dogs in the district.
Local officials used a church gathering on Sunday to sensitise residents on prompt wound care and the need for urgent medical attention after any suspected bite. Rabies is close to universally fatal once symptoms appear but is fully preventable with timely post-exposure treatment, underscoring the stakes of the supply gap.
