Uganda prepares final phase of nationwide mosquito-net distribution
Uganda’s Ministry of Health, through the National Malaria Control Division, has intensified preparations for the fifth and final wave of its long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) Universal Coverage Campaign. Wave 5 will cover the Kampala Metropolitan Region, comprising Kampala and Wakiso districts.
In a statement published on 4 November, the Ministry said the first four waves had been completed since the campaign began in January 2026:
Wave 1 (January): 20 districts, including Lira, Jinja, Mbale and Iganga.
Wave 2 (April): 32 districts across Acholi, Teso, Elgon and Busoga.
Wave 3 (May): targeted communities in West Nile, Ankole and Toro.
Wave 4 (completed in October): the Buganda region excluding Kampala and Wakiso, plus selected areas of Kigezi and Karamoja.
The Ministry’s April campaign statement had scheduled wave 4 for July and the Kampala and Wakiso wave for September 2026, so the final wave is later than originally planned. The 4 November statement gives no reason for the change and no new date.
Households are urged not only to receive nets but to hang them, use them every night and maintain them properly.
The campaign is implemented in partnership with the Global Fund and the United States President’s Malaria Initiative, and the Government of Uganda.
