Uganda Faces Growing Need to Finance Major Energy Infrastructure

KAMPALA, Uganda — 31 July 2026

Uganda’s rapidly expanding energy needs are putting financing for electricity infrastructure at the centre of the country’s development agenda. The issue was highlighted at Uganda’s Power & Electricity Forum, where government, financial institutions, utilities, development partners, academia and private-sector representatives discussed how to finance the infrastructure required to meet projected energy demand.

According to GET.transform, Uganda is planning for tenfold growth in energy demand, making investment in generation, transmission, distribution and off-grid electrification increasingly urgent. The forum brought together more than 100 participants and examined innovative financing approaches for critical energy infrastructure.

Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development also highlighted the mobilisation of financing for the country’s Mission 300 Energy Compact, alongside challenges involving reliable electricity supply, distribution, off-grid electrification and electronic waste management. The Mission 300 initiative is particularly significant because Uganda’s electricity-access agenda is increasingly being linked to broader economic transformation.

Reliable electricity is critical for industrialisation, digital services, health facilities, education, agricultural processing and small businesses. However, expanding access requires more than generation capacity. Investment must also reach transmission and distribution networks and underserved communities.

The financing challenge therefore creates opportunities for development finance institutions, commercial banks, climate funds and private investors to participate in Uganda’s energy transition.
