Uganda and UK Deepen Health Partnership Around Research and Workforce Development
KAMPALA, Uganda — 30 July 2026
Uganda and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in healthcare, research and health-worker development following the Second UK–Uganda Health Partnerships Summit in Kampala.
The summit brought together government officials, health professionals, researchers, academics, development partners and members of the Ugandan health diaspora. Uganda's High Commission in London reported on the meeting on 30 July 2026. The partnership focuses on healthcare delivery, research, innovation and sustainable capacity building. Among the initiatives highlighted was the Virtual Clinical Grand Rounds programme, jointly conducted by Uganda's Ministry of Health and NHS England trainers. The programme reportedly engages more than 200 healthcare workers across Uganda, providing access to specialist clinical expertise.
The summit also highlighted the training of more than 320 nurses in critical-care fundamentals through a partnership involving Cambridge University Press & Assessment. The collaboration comes as Uganda continues efforts to strengthen its health workforce and expand access to specialised services. Health-worker capacity remains a major development issue across East Africa, particularly in areas requiring specialist skills. Partnerships that combine local institutions with international professional networks can help address gaps while supporting knowledge transfer.
The Uganda–UK partnership also reflects a broader trend in international health cooperation: moving from traditional technical assistance toward longer-term institutional relationships involving research, education, innovation and professional exchange.
