Tripartite Summit Puts Infrastructure and Industrialisation at Centre of African Trade Agenda

NAIROBI, Kenya — 29–31 July 2026

The fourth COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite Summit has placed infrastructure, industrial development and intra-African trade at the centre of efforts to strengthen regional economic integration. Held in Nairobi from 29 to 31 July, the summit brought together the three regional economic communities under the theme “Deepening Intra-African Trade Anchored on Infrastructure and Industrial Development.”

The summit’s stated objective was to expand trade within the Tripartite Free Trade Area by strengthening infrastructure and industrial capacity. The organisers argue that better infrastructure and stronger productive capacity can reduce trade costs, strengthen regional value chains and improve economic resilience. For East Africa, the discussions are particularly important because the region is increasingly looking beyond traditional trade agreements toward practical infrastructure connecting markets. Transport corridors, energy networks, digital infrastructure and industrial-processing capacity are becoming central to the region’s competitiveness.

The summit also comes at a time when African countries are seeking to increase intra-African trade and reduce exposure to external supply-chain disruptions. For development partners, the agenda creates a broad investment landscape spanning transport logistics, border infrastructure, industrial parks, energy, trade facilitation and private-sector development.

The challenge, however, remains implementation. Infrastructure commitments must translate into functioning corridors, lower trade costs and stronger regional value chains if integration is to deliver tangible benefits to businesses and communities.

Development significance: The Tripartite agenda is increasingly connecting regional integration with industrialisation rather than treating trade liberalisation as an end in itself.
