Tanzania Positioned as Key Hub in East Africa's Migration Response

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — 19 August 2026

Tanzania is strengthening its role in regional migration management as the country and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) deepen cooperation on migration governance, mobility and humanitarian response.

IOM Director General Amy Pope and President Samia Suluhu Hassan reaffirmed the partnership during discussions in Dar es Salaam on 19 August. IOM described Tanzania as being at the heart of East Africa's migration response, reflecting the country's geographical position along important regional migration routes.

Tanzania's role is significant because migration across East Africa is driven by a combination of economic opportunity, displacement, climate pressures, family movement and regional mobility.

The country's position also means that migration management intersects with border governance, humanitarian protection, labour mobility and regional development.

For the development community, the policy challenge is balancing effective migration management with protection for migrants and refugees and opportunities for migration to contribute to development.

Well-managed mobility can support labour markets, remittances, skills transfer and regional economic integration. Poorly managed migration systems, by contrast, can increase vulnerability to exploitation, trafficking and unsafe journeys.

The partnership with IOM therefore has implications beyond migration administration. It touches the wider question of how East African states manage population mobility while supporting economic development and protecting vulnerable people.

The significance is particularly strong as the EAC continues pursuing greater regional integration and labour mobility.

For Tanzania and its partners, the next challenge will be translating political cooperation into effective migration governance, stronger protection systems and better links between mobility and development.
