Tanzania Lists Inaugural Offshore Shilling-Denominated Bond on London Stock Exchange, Signals Possible Eurobond

LONDON / DAR ES SALAAM — 23 July 2026

Tanzania listed its inaugural Tanzanian shilling-denominated offshore bond on the London Stock Exchange on Friday 24 July 2026, marking a major step in the government's efforts to diversify financing for development projects and deepen access to international capital markets. The bond was issued by the International Finance Corporation and Finance Minister Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar officiated the launch as Guest of Honour, during a six-day working visit to London running from 21 to 26 July 2026.

The listing comes as Tanzania accelerates investment in major infrastructure projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway, ports, roads and energy, which require substantial long-term financing. Parliament approved a 62.33 trillion Tanzanian shilling budget for the 2026 to 2027 financial year in June.

Separately, speaking at a media briefing in London on 23 July, Minister Omar confirmed that a Eurobond was an option on the table if market conditions were favourable, to help cover external borrowing needs estimated at approximately one billion dollars. A government advisor indicated a maximum size of 500 million dollars for any potential Eurobond issuance.

During the visit, the Minister engaged with global asset managers, sovereign investors, development finance institutions and commercial banks, promoting investment opportunities across Tanzania's infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, agriculture, mining and financial services sectors.
