The East African Community has launched new initiatives aimed at strengthening pandemic preparedness and response systems across member states.
The program focuses on improving disease surveillance, strengthening laboratory testing capacity, and enhancing cross-border collaboration among health authorities.
Public health experts say regional cooperation is essential in managing disease outbreaks, particularly in a region characterized by extensive cross-border trade, migration, and shared ecosystems.
The initiative is expected to support member states in developing coordinated responses to emerging health threats, including infectious disease outbreaks and public health emergencies.
Strengthening regional surveillance and response mechanisms could significantly improve early detection and containment of outbreaks before they spread across borders.
The program builds on lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed vulnerabilities in global and regional health security systems.
Regional health leaders believe that stronger coordination among EAC partner states will be critical in protecting populations and improving overall public health resilience.
