The revitalisation of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) underscores a renewed appreciation for legacy infrastructure in East Africa’s development strategy.

Originally constructed in the 1970s as a symbol of pan-African cooperation, the railway has faced decades of underinvestment and operational challenges. The current upgrade program aims to reverse this trend through track rehabilitation, rolling stock modernization, and institutional reforms.

Stakeholders view the project as critical to enhancing the efficiency of the Central Corridor, which links East Africa to Southern African markets. By increasing freight capacity and reducing transit costs, the revitalised railway could play a pivotal role in regional trade integration.

However, analysts caution that infrastructure upgrades must be accompanied by governance reforms to ensure long-term sustainability.
