South Sudan: Economic Reforms Highlight Need for Stronger Social Services

Urge DevWire / 16. Febraury 2026/

South Sudanese officials have raised concerns about outdated trade policies that are limiting government revenue, warning that reforms are needed to strengthen public finances and support national development programs.

Economists say improving revenue collection will be critical to funding essential services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure in the young nation. Stronger fiscal policies could enable the government to invest more effectively in social programs and reduce dependence on external aid.

As South Sudan continues its integration into the East African Community, policymakers are under increasing pressure to align economic reforms with regional standards while improving social service delivery.
