Somalia's embassy in China hosts industrialisation and special economic zones forum

Beijing, 2 July 2026 – The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in the People's Republic of China hosted the Somalia Industrialization and Special Economic Zones Forum, bringing together more than 300 Somali and Chinese business leaders, investors and chamber of commerce representatives to explore trade, industrial and investment opportunities between the two countries. The forum, held under the theme of leveraging China's zero tariff policy to promote Somalia's export led industrial growth, coincided with celebrations marking the 66th anniversary of Somalia's independence and unity.

Somalia's Ambassador to China, Hodan Osman Abdi, said China's zero tariff policy for African products has created new export opportunities for Somalia, citing the country's geographic location, natural resources and youthful population as drivers of economic growth. The forum showcased flagship projects under Somalia's National Transformation Plan, including the New Mogadishu Special Economic Zone, presented by engineer Ahmed Kirish, which includes plans for modern ports, airports and industrial zones with supporting infrastructure.

Business to business meetings were held on the sidelines of the forum, providing Somali and Chinese companies the opportunity to explore partnerships and investment prospects. The embassy said the event forms part of ongoing efforts to promote investment and expand trade relations between Somalia and China.
