Somalia receives $2 million for school meals and child nutrition
The Republic of Korea has contributed US$2 million to the World Food Programme to support school meals and treatment for children suffering from acute malnutrition in Somalia.
WFP announced the contribution on 30 September, saying it will support 47,500 children through home-grown school meals and nutrition interventions.
The funding comes as Somalia continues to face severe food insecurity, displacement and climate-related pressures. The country's humanitarian situation has been compounded by drought conditions and the threat of further shocks associated with changing rainfall patterns.
Home-grown school feeding links nutrition assistance with local agricultural production. Rather than relying entirely on externally sourced food, the model can create demand for produce from smallholder farmers while providing children with regular nutritious meals.
The contribution will also support treatment for children affected by moderate acute malnutrition, addressing immediate nutritional needs while strengthening access to essential services.
School meals can have wider development benefits beyond nutrition. They can reduce the cost of schooling for vulnerable families, encourage attendance and help children remain in education during periods of economic or humanitarian stress.
For Somalia, where displacement and food insecurity can interrupt children's education, maintaining school-based support is particularly important.
The Korean contribution adds to WFP's efforts to sustain food and nutrition programmes as humanitarian financing becomes increasingly constrained.
The programme demonstrates how humanitarian funding can also support longer-term development outcomes by linking child nutrition, education and local food systems.
