East Africa Health Report
Geneva | 04 June 2026
Scientists and global health partners are accelerating efforts to develop vaccines and treatments targeting the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola responsible for the current outbreak in Central and East Africa.
Unlike the more common Zaire strain of Ebola, the Bundibugyo variant currently has no licensed vaccine or approved therapeutic treatment.
The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has committed emergency funding to support multiple vaccine development programs, including candidates being advanced by research institutions in Europe and North America.
WHO officials said several vaccine candidates are expected to enter clinical evaluation in the coming months, although large-scale deployment remains months away.
Researchers are also assessing potential treatment options including antiviral medicines and monoclonal antibody therapies.
