Rwanda Turns to Eco-Tourism as Climate and Investment Strategy

MUSANZE, Rwanda — 1 August 2026

Rwanda is seeking to position eco-tourism as both an economic growth opportunity and a climate-resilience strategy. Government leaders, tourism businesses, investors, conservation organisations and development partners gathered in Musanze on 1 August for the first Climate & Business Talks of 2026.

The discussions focused on “Eco-Tourism as a Competitive Advantage: Investment, Certification and Climate Resilience.” The event was organised by the Embassy of Germany in Kigali in partnership with the Government of Rwanda. The discussions reflect a broader shift in development thinking around tourism: moving beyond visitor numbers toward investment models that protect ecosystems while generating income and employment. For Rwanda, the approach is particularly relevant because tourism is closely connected to conservation, rural livelihoods and the country’s international investment profile.

The eco-tourism agenda also intersects with climate adaptation. Protecting landscapes, forests and biodiversity can strengthen ecosystem resilience while creating economic opportunities for communities and tourism enterprises. Development partners are increasingly interested in such models because they can connect climate finance, private investment, conservation and local economic development.

The focus on certification is also important. International sustainability standards can help tourism businesses demonstrate environmental performance and potentially improve access to responsible investment.

Development significance: Rwanda is increasingly treating climate action not simply as an environmental obligation but as part of its strategy for attracting investment and creating new economic opportunities.
