Rwanda Records US$353.26 Million Formal Trade Deficit in June

KIGALI, Rwanda — 30 July 2026

Rwanda recorded a US$353.26 million deficit in formal trade in goods in June 2026, according to the latest external-trade statistics released by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) on 30 July. The figure represents a significant increase from the US$211.83 million trade deficit recorded in May 2026.

NISR's latest data show that Rwanda's domestic exports nevertheless increased by 33.08 percent month-on-month in June, indicating that the larger trade deficit was not simply the result of weaker exports. The overall balance reflects the relationship between domestic exports, re-exports and imports during the month.

The figures provide an important indicator of Rwanda's external-sector position as the country continues to pursue export diversification, industrialisation and greater integration into regional and international markets.

A persistent merchandise trade deficit is not necessarily an indication of economic weakness. For a developing economy, elevated imports can reflect investment in machinery, infrastructure, intermediate goods and other inputs needed for economic expansion. The development question is whether such imports contribute to productive capacity and whether export growth can progressively narrow the external gap.

Rwanda's latest figures should therefore be considered alongside other indicators, including economic growth, export performance, investment and production costs.

The release comes shortly after NISR reported that Rwanda's economy grew 10 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, demonstrating that the country's strong domestic economic expansion is occurring alongside significant external-trade pressures.

Development significance: Rwanda's June trade figures highlight the challenge of converting strong economic growth and rising exports into a more balanced external trade position.
