Rwanda Maintains Ebola Preparedness as DRC Outbreak Enters Second Month

Kigali | 16 June 2026

Rwanda’s Ministry of Health says the country remains on alert as it continues to monitor the Ebola disease outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus in Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of Congo.

In an update issued on 16 June, the Ministry said there were no Ebola cases in Rwanda and no active cases in areas bordering the country. Authorities said the risk of transmission to Rwanda remains low, but surveillance and preparedness measures are being maintained for early detection and rapid response.

The update came one month after the outbreak was declared in Ituri Province. Rwanda has previously strengthened border health measures and public communication following disease outbreaks in neighbouring countries.

The Ministry’s message focused on public reassurance while emphasizing continued vigilance. Rwanda’s experience with previous high-risk disease events, including Marburg response measures, has placed preparedness, early detection and coordination at the centre of its public health approach.
