Rwanda Inaugurates Its First Integrated Steel Plant in Musanze
Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva has officially inaugurated A1 Iron & Steel Rwanda Ltd., the country's first integrated iron and steel manufacturing plant, at Musanze Industrial Park in Rwanda's Northern Province. Built by Indian investors at a cost of approximately USD 20 million, the facility processes locally mined iron ore from Burera and Ngororero districts into finished construction products, including reinforcement bars, wire rods, hollow sections, nails and chain-link fencing.
The plant, which began production in April 2026, has an annual capacity of roughly 250,000 tonnes and currently employs about 500 people, a figure expected to rise to 1,000 as operations scale. Officials said the facility is expected to reduce Rwanda's reliance on imported steel, estimated to save the country up to USD 100 million to 150 million annually once running at full capacity.
Northern Province Governor Maurice Mugabowagahunde described the investment as reviving the region's historical iron-working tradition through modern industrial production, while Nsengiyumva emphasised that Rwanda's broader industrialisation strategy now depends on ensuring factories operate at full capacity to deliver expected economic returns.
