Rwanda Begins Compensation Payments for Regional Rusizi III Hydropower Project

Rusizi III Energy Limited confirmed that signing of compensation agreements for project affected households under the 206 megawatt Rusizi III Regional Hydropower Project began in Rwanda's Nzahaha Sector on 20 July, with reporting on the exercise current as of 24 July.

Approximately seven million US dollars, roughly ten billion Rwandan francs, will be paid to Rwandan households out of an estimated 21 million dollar regional Resettlement Action Plan covering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The list of eligible recipients was drawn from a valuation exercise conducted through September 2025, with a cut off date of 8 June 2026 set to prevent inflated claims.

The 800 million dollar project, financed through a mix including the World Bank, African Development Bank, European Union, European Investment Bank, Agence Francaise de Developpement, KfW, IFC and British International Investment, is projected to benefit around 30 million people across Rwanda, Burundi and DRC once commissioned, nearly doubling Burundi's installed generation capacity and raising Rwanda's renewable capacity by close to 30 percent.
