The East African Development  Brief

Date of Release: May 4, 2026

During a historic address to the Tanzanian Parliament in Dodoma, President William Ruto emphasized that Kenya and Tanzania must operate as partners rather than rivals. The administration has set a bold target to facilitate KSh130 billion in new trade and KSh65 billion in fresh cross-border investments over the next three years. For supply chain stakeholders, this bilateral push is aimed directly at dismantling persistent non-tariff barriers that have historically hindered the efficient flow of goods across the border. President Ruto highlighted the need to cultivate closer ties to harness regional financial capital for large-scale infrastructure projects. This diplomatic rapprochement is expected to stabilize trade corridors and improve the resilience of East African supply networks. Furthermore, both nations renewed their commitment to eight cooperation agreements designed to streamline logistics and investment. By focusing on economic symbiosis, the two largest economies in the EAC are creating a more attractive hub for global manufacturing and distribution.
