Makerere University Unveils Digital System to Track Student Academic Progress
Makerere University has introduced a Digital Student Tracking Framework designed to monitor students' academic progress and improve completion and graduation rates, unveiled by Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe at the university's Main Building. The system moves the university from identifying graduation-completion concerns after the fact to taking concrete institutional action while students are still enrolled, with particular focus on Master's and PhD candidates.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr. Sarah Ssali said academic and research processes at the university have been substantially digitised, reducing reliance on paper-based systems and the associated risk of forgery. The framework arrives as Makerere expands its graduate programmes significantly: Nawangwe confirmed the university admitted 7,000 students into graduate programmes for the 2026/2027 academic year, part of its push to become a research-led institution. The university is also expanding physical infrastructure, including a near-complete graduate building and a planned distance-learning facility.
Alongside the tracking system, Makerere has reinstated supplementary examinations for final-year students, to be held once annually between Semester Two and the start of the next academic year, intended to support academic progression while maintaining standards.
