Policymakers and innovators convene in Kigali to shape the region’s AI future.

On 1 April 2026, Kigali hosted a landmark regional conference on artificial intelligence, bringing together policymakers, academics, and innovators from across East Africa.

The event, convened by the Inter-University Council for East Africa, focused on shaping policy frameworks for AI adoption and strengthening collaboration among universities and research institutions.

Speakers at the conference highlighted the importance of aligning education systems with emerging technologies, noting that the region’s youthful population presents a significant opportunity for innovation.

Participants also called for ethical AI frameworks and investment in local talent to ensure that digital transformation is both inclusive and sustainable.
