Kenya's Rift Valley lake flooding reaches breaking point after years of rising waters

Baringo County, Kenya, 20 July 2026 – Communities around Kenya's Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria have reached a tipping point after months of continued flooding, following years of above average rainfall across the Rift Valley basin, according to researchers who have documented the crisis. Homes, schools and a health clinic have been submerged as the lakes have expanded significantly beyond their historical boundaries.

Simon Onywere, a geologist and spatial environmental planner at Kenyatta University who has studied the Rift Valley lakes for more than a decade, said the lakes are responding to several forces acting simultaneously, with rainfall representing only one part of a larger hydrological pattern. Joyce Kimutai, a climate scientist at Kenya's Meteorological Department, said no single factor explains the rises being observed, despite years of research into the phenomenon.

The flooding has forced repeated displacement of residents in Baringo County, with some families reporting having relocated multiple times since the lakes began rising more than a decade ago. Affected communities have lost access to cultivable land and pasture for livestock, compounding economic hardship in the region. Forecasts indicate a continued rising trend in rainfall across the Rift Valley basin, suggesting lake levels are likely to rise further in the near term.
