Kenya's health insurer to disburse 16 billion shillings in payments for July

Kenya's Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the Social Health Authority would disburse approximately 16 billion Kenyan shillings in payments covering the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund, the Social Health Insurance Fund, the Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund and the Primary Healthcare Fund for the month of July.

Duale said the disbursement, expected within two days of his announcement, would be published on the Social Health Authority's website so hospitals and members of the public could verify individual facility payments. He disputed recent reports citing Controller of Budget data showing outstanding claims of 26.87 billion shillings as of 31 March, saying the Social Health Authority's own records showed it owed county governments 6.3 billion shillings, and describing the higher figure reported in the media as inaccurate.

The Cabinet Secretary said the government maintains detailed digital records of all claims, including those rejected and returned, and that a dashboard exists showing data for each facility and its associated payment amount, as part of continued rollout of the Social Health Authority since the transition from the previous National Hospital Insurance Fund.
