Kenya trains humanitarian responders ahead of forecast El Niño rains
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and humanitarian partners are strengthening emergency preparedness in Kenya through specialised training for practitioners involved in disaster response and cash assistance programmes.
The five-day Market Assessment Tools Training began on 21 September 2026 at the Royal Canaan Nairobi Hotel and was reported by JKUAT on 25 September. The programme is being delivered in partnership with the CALP Network, Kenya Cash Working Group and Arid and Semi-Arid Lands Humanitarian Network.
Participants include representatives from the National Disaster Management Authority, Kenya Red Cross Society, Plan International Kenya, Caritas Kenya and organisations working with vulnerable communities in arid and semi-arid areas.
The training focuses on market assessment tools used in humanitarian programming, particularly Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA). These approaches allow response agencies to assess whether local markets can support emergency assistance and whether households can safely access essential goods and services.
The initiative comes as humanitarian organisations prepare for forecast El Niño-related rainfall, which could increase flooding and disrupt livelihoods and access to basic services in vulnerable areas.
Strengthening market analysis and coordination can help humanitarian agencies design responses that reflect local conditions and reduce delays in delivering assistance.
The training also brings together government agencies and humanitarian organisations, supporting a more coordinated approach to preparedness and emergency response.
