Kenya Strengthens Pipeline of Bankable Renewable Energy Projects

NAIROBI, Kenya — 29 July 2026

Kenya has strengthened its pipeline of investment-ready renewable-energy projects following the completion of a technical-assistance programme designed to improve access to finance for clean-energy businesses. The APRA Support Project, implemented between July 2024 and April 2026, helped strengthen Kenya’s clean-energy investment ecosystem by supporting project developers, financial institutions and investment partnerships.

The programme supported 21 clean-energy companies and projects across areas including grid-connected renewable energy, clean cooking, productive-use energy, mini-grids, electric mobility, green hydrogen and manufacturing. More than half of the supported projects were fully Kenyan-owned enterprises, while all met at least one criterion under the internationally recognised 2X Challenge framework for gender-responsive investment.

The initiative also worked with Kenyan financial institutions, including Credit Bank, Cooperative Bank of Kenya, Equity Bank and Kenya Women Microfinance Bank, to strengthen their ability to finance renewable-energy projects. Thirty-five banking professionals completed specialised training, while matchmaking activities generated nearly 200 meetings between clean-energy companies and financiers.

The programme forms part of the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA), an African-led initiative launched at COP28 to accelerate renewable-energy deployment, green industrialisation and sustainable development. The next phase is expected to build on the investment pipeline through the APRA Champions programme.

Development significance: Kenya is increasingly positioning its clean-energy transition as an investment opportunity, with the development-finance ecosystem focusing not only on infrastructure but also on making projects commercially bankable.
