Kenya hosted the 11th Our Ocean Conference in Mombasa from 16 to 18 June 2026, marking the first time the global ocean summit was held on African soil.

The conference was held under the theme Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future, placing Kenya and the Western Indian Ocean region at the centre of global discussions on ocean protection, blue economy investment, marine conservation and coastal livelihoods.

The official conference platform said the event focused on moving the global ocean agenda from dialogue to delivery, with emphasis on jobs, equity and healthy oceans.

Kenya’s hosting of the conference reflected growing attention to Africa’s coastal economies, fisheries, maritime security, marine biodiversity and climate resilience.

The conference brought together governments, scientists, communities, innovators, businesses and development partners to advance commitments around marine protection, sustainable fisheries, ocean finance and climate action.

The summit also positioned Kenya as a regional convening hub for sustainable blue economy cooperation, with implications for coastal communities, trade, tourism, research and ocean governance across East Africa.
