Kenya explores potential collaboration with Aranda on antibiotic access and antimicrobial resistance
Kenya’s Ministry of Health is exploring potential collaboration with Aranda to improve access to essential antibiotics and strengthen the response to antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr Ouma Oluga held discussions on 2 November with Aranda Chief Executive Officer Dr Angus L. C. O’Shea, who paid him a courtesy call in Nairobi. The meeting followed earlier discussions between the two on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York in September 2026. The Ministry published its account on 3 November.
The discussions covered sustainable approaches to antibiotic access, antimicrobial stewardship and Universal Health Coverage. Dr Oluga said wider access to antibiotics must come with stronger diagnostic capacity, surveillance and responsible prescribing, to protect the effectiveness of existing medicines.
He welcomed innovative financing and delivery models, but said any collaboration should complement existing structures, including the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) and the Social Health Authority (SHA), rather than create parallel systems.
The meeting reviewed Aranda’s ongoing scoping mission in Kenya, which has included engagements with KEMSA, SHA and the county governments of Nairobi, Kiambu and Murang’a. Dr Oluga encouraged Aranda to develop evidence-based recommendations on areas of cooperation, implementation, financing and expected public-health outcomes. He said further engagement would be guided by affordability, sustainability, public-health impact and value for money.
No agreement, funding commitment or implementation timetable was announced. The discussions remain exploratory.
