Kenya’s Ministry of Health has urged county governments to accelerate Universal Health Coverage reforms as the Social Health Authority continues implementation across the country.
Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga called on counties to intensify SHA registration and public awareness, complete the transition of UHC staff into substantive positions by 1 July 2026, deploy SHA claims officers in referral facilities, strengthen blood donation programmes, and improve use of digital health systems.
The Ministry reported that 6,015 county health facilities currently hold valid operating licences, representing an 88 percent compliance rate.
The government says the reforms are intended to strengthen health financing, workforce development, digitisation, commodity security, and service delivery under the Taifa Care agenda.
The update indicates that Kenya’s health reform process is moving from policy design toward operational implementation, with counties expected to play a central role in service delivery and public uptake.
