Kenya confirms first imported Bundibugyo virus disease case as regional response intensifies
Kenya has confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease, prompting intensified surveillance and cross-border coordination with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
According to WHO, the patient, a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, became ill there before travelling through Uganda to Nairobi. The patient arrived in Kenya on 3 October, was isolated after reaching hospital and subsequently tested positive at the National Virology Reference Laboratory and the Kenya Medical Research Institute. The patient died on the night of 5 October.
Kenyan authorities notified WHO on 6 October and implemented contact monitoring, case investigation, screening at high-risk points of entry and public risk communication. Africa CDC announced on the same day that a multidisciplinary team was travelling to Kenya to support the national response.
By 6 October, Kenya had screened more than 652,000 incoming travellers, tested 267 suspected samples and trained approximately 5,000 health workers in Ebola prevention and management. Isolation units had been identified and assessed across 27 high-risk counties.
The case highlights the importance of regional health security in East Africa, where cross-border movement connects communities and healthcare systems. Rapid detection, laboratory capacity, infection prevention and public communication remain central to limiting further transmission.
