Kenya has commissioned the Northern Regional Blood Transfusion Centre at Garissa County Referral Hospital to strengthen access to safe blood and blood products in North Eastern Kenya.

The centre was commissioned by Cabinet Secretary for Health Hon. Aden Duale during the 2026 World Blood Donor Day celebrations.

The Ministry said the facility is expected to support emergency care, maternal health, surgery, cancer treatment and management of severe conditions requiring blood transfusion.

North Eastern Kenya has historically faced challenges linked to distance, emergency response capacity, and access to specialised health services. The new centre is expected to reduce pressure on facilities that previously relied on blood supplies from other regions.

The commissioning forms part of broader efforts to decentralise blood transfusion services and strengthen the national blood system.
