Kenya Commissions KSh 8.4 Billion Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Project in Kisumu
The Kenyan government has commissioned the KSh 8.4 billion (approximately USD 65 million) Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Project in Kisumu City, jointly funded by the Government of Kenya and the European Union. The project is designed to connect an additional 53,000 households to reliable piped water and 23,000 households to sewerage services, more than doubling the city's sewerage coverage.
Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o, who accompanied the commissioning, said the upgrade is expected to reduce network water losses by 27 percent and extend 24-hour water and sanitation supply to major health facilities across the city. The project also targets more than 7,000 affordable housing units, which will be connected to reliable water and sewerage infrastructure as part of the rollout.
The investment forms part of a broader push to expand urban water infrastructure in secondary cities around Lake Victoria, addressing persistent gaps in access as Kisumu's population continues to grow. Officials framed the project as foundational infrastructure with implications extending beyond individual households to public health, business continuity and institutional service delivery across the lakeside city.
