Kenya has taken steps forward in extending its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line to Kisumu, an important strategic development for improving domestic connectivity and regional trade. The Kenyan government has initiated preparations, including compensation of residents whose land will be affected by the project, ahead of the construction start scheduled for March 2026.
Speaking in Kisumu on Tuesday, Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga indicated that phase 2B of the line will be completed by June 2027, opening up the Western region for the movement of goods and services.
The SGR extension to Kisumu is expected to be completed by June 2027 and is designed to foster more efficient freight and passenger movement across the country’s western region. This project aligns with broader regional infrastructure efforts to streamline logistics systems and support economic activity across East Africa.
By enhancing rail connectivity, Kenya aims to reduce transportation costs, support industry competitiveness, and facilitate expanded trade with neighbouring economies.
