EU announces €60 million to strengthen primary healthcare in Ethiopia

The European Union has announced €60 million in funding to strengthen primary healthcare in Ethiopia as part of a new package of investments under its Global Health Resilience Initiative.
The European Commission announced the investment on 25 September 2026 during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week. The funding is intended to support Ethiopia's health system and improve access to essential healthcare services.
The announcement forms part of three new Global Gateway investments. Alongside the Ethiopia allocation, the package includes a €63.5 million EU guarantee intended to mobilise private investment in health and nutrition businesses across sub-Saharan Africa, and a €15 million European Investment Bank loan to expand vaccine and biological medicines production in Colombia.
The Ethiopia investment comes as development partners seek to strengthen health systems, expand access to essential services and improve countries' capacity to respond to public health emergencies.
Primary healthcare is particularly important for delivering routine services, supporting maternal and child health, improving early disease detection and reducing pressure on hospitals.
The EU's Global Health Resilience Initiative, adopted in May 2026, focuses on resilient, country-led health systems, stronger prevention and preparedness, diversified medical supply chains and greater international cooperation.
The wider package also seeks to mobilise private capital and support local manufacturing of health products, linking health investment with employment, technology and infrastructure development.
The European Commission did not specify a detailed breakdown of the €60 million Ethiopia allocation in the announcement. The funding should therefore be understood as a confirmed commitment, with implementation details subject to further programme documentation.
