Ethiopia displacement into Kenya reaches 36,000 as border communities seek urgent assistance
Around 36,000 people have crossed from Ethiopia into Kenya since fighting flared in and around the border town of Moyale, the UN refugee agency UNHCR said on 27 October. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports a slightly higher count of about 36,600.
IOM says nearly 11,000 of those who crossed are sheltering at a church compound, while about 25,600 are being hosted by communities along the border. The Kenya Red Cross reports that displaced people are staying in six camps and in villages within host communities. UNHCR says many of those arriving are women and children.
Reports indicate that the fighting involves forces from Ethiopia's Oromia and Somali regions amid a territorial dispute. Early reports on 22 October described hundreds of people crossing; the number has since grown rapidly.
UNHCR identifies food as the most urgent need, followed by safe drinking water, shelter, sanitation and healthcare. IOM is working with the Government of Kenya and UNHCR to collect displacement data and assess needs, and has stressed that host communities, which are accommodating most of the displaced despite limited resources, require particular attention. Local leaders in Marsabit County have warned that the arrivals could overwhelm host communities and have appealed for support. Kenyan police reported three incidents involving stray bullets in Moyale last week.
Displacement on this scale places simultaneous demand on water, food and health services in a county with limited capacity. Reliable registration, needs assessment and coordination between county authorities, national agencies and humanitarian partners will shape how quickly assistance reaches both displaced families and the households hosting them.
