East African Community scholarship programme prepares new postgraduate opportunities for regional students
The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) is preparing further postgraduate scholarship opportunities under Phase II of the East African Community Scholarship Programme, a regional initiative supported by the East African Community and the Federal Republic of Germany.
The programme is designed to expand access to postgraduate education for academically qualified students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds while strengthening regional integration and skills development.
According to IUCEA, the forthcoming opportunities will include scholarships for master's students wishing to study in an EAC Partner State other than their country of citizenship. Participating countries include Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
Priority disciplines include mathematics, engineering, technology, informatics, science and business science. Indicative eligibility criteria include EAC citizenship, an age limit of 35 years and a minimum bachelor's qualification of Second Class Upper Division or equivalent.
The scholarship package is expected to cover tuition fees, a monthly stipend, one return air ticket, medical insurance and a research allowance. At least 50 per cent of scholarships are reserved for women, according to the programme's published information.
The initiative aims to develop skills and professional capacity across the region by enabling students to pursue advanced studies outside their home countries and build regional academic and professional networks.
IUCEA has clarified that applications for the forthcoming intake are not yet open. Prospective applicants should monitor its official channels for application dates, participating universities and final eligibility requirements.
The programme is part of wider EAC and German cooperation to strengthen higher education and develop skills relevant to regional economic and social development.
