East African Community adopts Bujumbura Resolutions on Kiswahili and artificial intelligence

Bujumbura, 17 July 2026

The East African Community said its Partner States have adopted the Bujumbura Resolutions on Kiswahili, Multilingualism and Artificial Intelligence, committing the region to treating Kiswahili as a strategic component of its digital infrastructure. The resolutions call for a regional roadmap to digitise Kiswahili language resources and unveil first steps toward a Kiswahili Trust Mark for artificial intelligence systems operating across the region.

As part of the same events, the East African Kiswahili Commission announced the launch of a Kiswahili translation of the Model Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan for Media Institutions, originally developed by UNESCO, to strengthen disaster risk preparedness and crisis communication among Kiswahili speaking media houses across the bloc.

The Community said the outcomes build on the EAC Declaration on Artificial Intelligence adopted in Kigali in April 2026 and the EAC Artificial Intelligence Alliance, and will be pursued jointly with regional institutions including the East African Science and Technology Commission, the Inter University Council for East Africa and the East African Development Bank.
