East Africa Remains Continent's Fastest-Growing Region at 6.4 Percent as Ethiopia and Rwanda Lead Expansion
NAIROBI — July 2026
East Africa is the continent's fastest-growing region in 2026, expanding at approximately 6.4 percent as Ethiopia and Rwanda power ahead. Ethiopia is projected to grow at approximately 9.8 percent, Rwanda at 7.3 percent, and Tanzania at 6.1 percent.
This outperforms the AfDB's earlier projection of 5.9 percent regional growth for 2026, which had anticipated a decline from 6.6 percent in 2025 due to supply chain disruptions linked to Middle East geopolitical tensions. The stronger-than-projected outturn reflects accelerated infrastructure investment, strong agricultural seasons in key economies, and continued momentum in digital and financial services sectors.
Kenyan companies are among the most active regional investors, acquiring rivals in Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda to expand across the bloc, reflecting growing private sector confidence in regional integration. Ethiopia recently launched its first stock exchange, ending a decades-long absence from equity capital markets.
