East Africa Higher Education Moves Toward Regional AI Network

NAIROBI, Kenya — 29 July 2026

East Africa’s higher education sector is moving toward deeper regional collaboration on artificial intelligence, research and innovation following the launch of a new Regional AI Network of Universities in Nairobi. The network was launched by the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) during its 17th Annual Meeting and Conference, which brought together more than 400 policymakers, university leaders, regulators, researchers, students, industry representatives and development partners.

The initiative is intended to connect universities working on AI education, research and innovation, allowing institutions to pool expertise, infrastructure and knowledge while strengthening responsible use of artificial intelligence. IUCEA also launched its Strategic Plan 2026–2031, developed through consultations involving EAC Partner States, universities, regulators, students, industry and development partners.

The conference highlighted the need for universities to move closer to industry and become more directly involved in solving economic and social challenges. Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, Dr Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, called for universities to become “living laboratories” where students work with industry on real-world problems. The regional approach could be particularly important as East African countries attempt to build digital economies while addressing shortages of advanced technical skills. The initiative also creates potential opportunities for development partners around AI skills, digital infrastructure, research financing, academic mobility and technology entrepreneurship.

Development significance: East Africa’s digital transformation is increasingly moving beyond connectivity toward building regional capabilities in artificial intelligence, research and innovation.
