The East African Development Brief
Regional energy agencies push for expanded cross-border electricity trade to improve reliability and reduce costs.
On 24 April 2026, officials from the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) reaffirmed commitments to expand cross-border electricity trade during a regional energy coordination meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
According to statements released after the meeting, member countries—including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Ethiopia—are accelerating efforts to operationalize interconnected grids and improve energy exchange mechanisms.
EAPP Secretary General Abel Didessa emphasized during the session that regional power integration is critical to addressing supply gaps and reducing electricity costs across the region.
“Power trade allows countries with surplus generation to support those facing deficits, improving overall system efficiency,” he noted.
Projects such as the Kenya–Ethiopia power interconnector and Uganda–Tanzania transmission lines were highlighted as key enablers of this integration.
Energy experts say this shift reflects a broader transition—from isolated national grids to shared regional energy systems, where stability is achieved collectively rather than individually.
